A: Aaaah, spelling. First of all, don’t be fooled: PLENTY Of girls misspell things, too. You just happen to mostly be friends with people who mostly get those sorts of things right. I don’t think it has anything to do with intrinsic intelligence or ability with words; rather, I think women are socialized to be a bit more detail-oriented and perfectionist about how their public profiles look, especially since on some level we’re still proving our intellectual worth against men because our society has not totally eradicated sexism yet. So frankly, the ladies are more likely to hit spell-check for a number of reasons.

Truth be told, there’s no easy answer, because I too am annoyed by sloppy speling, grammar, capitalization and punctuation. But you know what? I used to be one of those offenders. I didn’t misspell things, exactly, but I’d intentionally leave some words lowercase or skip punctuation marks and accent marks (in foreign languages)  in certain casual contexts, like in instant messages and social media or dating profiles. I thought it lent a more casual vibe to my writing; it was a way of trying to offset my natural uptightness about certain other things. Like, um, accent marks in foreign languages. Go figure! I eventually came to believe (thanks to my perfectionist professional writer of a husband) that this approach was silly, and that it harmed me more than it hurt me. Because, at the end of the day, people who care about such things REALLY care about it and judge you for it, and people who don’t won’t even notice your carefully crafted casual vibe.

I strongly urge you to give the dudes with sloppily written profiles a second chance. After all, they’re either trying to be cool (and it’s totally backfiring), or they just don’t realize how important the proofreading step is to a reader like you. If they seem like interesting, well-rounded fellas, give ‘em a chance and bring it up over text sometime. You can even say something sly like “Sorry if it takes me ages to get back to your texts! I know it sounds silly, but it’s a total pet peeve of mine when people don’t write everything out the way it should be, even online.” If he’s into you, I bet you a Bitcoin he starts cleaning up his language real quick!

In summary, PSA to all the singles out there: please proofread your profiles and use a spell-checker if possible! You can even ask a friend (preferably a persnickety female friend) to check your work. And if you think sloppy spelling is a headache, just think of the kind of language our current crop of teenagers is going to be using in their profiles a few years from now! LOL JK OMG BFF 4EVA <3

Q:  For guys who post pictures with women in them, is it appropriate to ask “who is the girl in the photo with you? Sister, lover, etc.”? And why are they posting pictures with other women in them – to make us jealous?

The good news is, this can actually be a nice opener. If you’re using a service like LikeBright to check out friends of your friends, then it’s totally reasonable to message them and ask if they’re actually single. After all, this can change faster than people bother to update their status on Facebook. 1. Plan a dinner menu from your local farmer’s market – Shopping at your local famers market supports your community and supports the Earth. The carbon footprint of farmer’s market produce is smaller because it isn’t shipped in from other countries. And the added benefit to you and the earth is that this produce is often 100% organic, reducing the chemicals you ingest and the impact of pesticides.

2. Leave your car at home - Plan a date that you can walk or bike too. Or, make it an active date by going on a walk in the park or along the beach. Bike to a coffee shop or out to brunch. Escaping to nature will remind you of all the great things nature can offer. Feel the wind in your hair and the earth beneath your feet.

3. Visit the zoo – Get in touch with your wild side and take you date to the zoo. Besides giggling at the sex-crazed bonobo monkeys or getting jiggy with the dancing bear, feel good knowing your admission to the zoo is saving animals and their habitats through conservation leadership and engaging experiences.

4. Get down and dirty in a community garden – We’re not talking about THAT kind of down and dirty. We’re talking about rolling up your sleeves and literally digging in the dirt. When much of our food comes pre-packed from the supermarket, we forget where it comes from and, in getting disconnected from the source, can loose and appreciation for how food is produced. Find a local community garden through the American Community Gardening Association and make a date to plant some veggies and taste produce fresh on the vine.

 5. Visit a National Park – Nothing like a walk in the woods or admiring a feat of mother nature to feel connected with the earth. The National Park Service  is a leader in protecting natural and cultural resources. Take you date to one of the country’s greatest treasures.

6. Go organic – Pick a restaurant for brunch, lunch, happy hour or dinner that only serves organic, in-season foods. Whole foods, natural foods, vegan and organic foods are better for you and for mother nature.

7. Calculate your carbon footprint – Geek is the new chic. Hop online with your date and visit Conversation International. Who ever has the smallest carbon footprint chooses where to go to dinner, and the loser with the bigger carbon impact foots the bill.

LikeBright lobbied hard on behalf of singles everywhere to establish Forever Alone Day as a national holiday. The bad news is that local government officials called our request “frivolous” and “impractical”. An unnamed source in the higher ranks of government was overhead saying “singles should band together and embrace their freedom, but not on the government’s dime”.
